American Express Membership Rewards

Membership Rewards are the loyalty points offered by American Express credit cards. Though the annual fees on American Express cards tend to be higher than other bank cards, the points are very versatile with 17 airline and 3 hotel transfer partners.

Cards that can earn Membership Rewards include:

Note: American Express has a "once per lifetime" rule for receiving the sign-up bonus on a particular card. In reality, this is about once every 7 years.

How do I earn Membership Rewards points?

The bulk of your Membership Rewards points are likely to be earned through sign-up bonuses (SUBs). You can also earn points through referral bonuses by giving your personal sign-up link to friends.

All American Express cards also earn at least one point per dollar spent, with bonus categories earning higher rates depending on the card. The Gold Card, for example, earns 4 points per dollar for all purchases at grocery stores and restaurants.

Can I combine Membership Rewards points with a partner?

Membership Rewards points are not transferrable and cannot be combined with anyone else's points. However, you may be able to combine points after they are transferred to travel partners. For example, JetBlue allows you to create a "points pool" with anyone you choose.

Who are American Expresses travel partners?

Points transfer to most travel partners in a 1:1 ratio, except where noted below. That means for every one 1 American Express point transferred, you'll receive 1 partner point.

  • Aer Lingus

  • Aeromexico (1:1.6)

  • Air Canada

  • Air France/KLM

  • ANA Mileage Club

  • Asia Miles

  • Avianca LifeMiles

  • British Airways Avios

  • Delta

  • Emirates

  • Ethiad

  • Iberia Plus

  • Hawaiian Airlines

  • JetBlue (1.25:1)

  • Qantas

  • Singapore

  • Virgin Atlantic

  • Choice Hotels

  • Hilton (1:2)

  • Marriott

How long does it take to transfer points?

Most point transfers are instant, though some can take up to 24 hours.

You must have an account for the rewards program that you are transferring points to before initiating the transfer. For example, if you want to transfer points to British Airways, you must make an Avios account first.

**The links above are referral links. If you use any of these links to apply for a credit card and you are approved, I will receive a pre-determined number of points as a referral bonus. Always use referral links to apply when possible, either from a friend or from a valued content creator. And share your own referral links with family and friends once you open a card you love!
